Can't edit text in a PDF? Here's what to check

PDF may look like regular text on the screen, but it may only contain a photo of the page inside. Sometimes the text is divided into many small blocks. First, find out what type of document you are working with; repeated clicking in the same place will not solve the problem.

Try it free in the editor

Step by step

  1. Open a copy of the document in the editor and try to select a specific text block using the Edit tool.
  2. If the entire page is an image, set the OCR language according to the source and run recognition for this page.
  3. After completing OCR, compare the recognized sentence with the original. Correct character substitutions before further editing.
  4. Edit shorter blocks step by step. If longer text does not fit, check the font size and block boundaries.
  5. Export a test PDF and open it again. Keep the original file.

Scan, text layer, and letters as curves

Text drawn as an image or curves is not a regular text layer. OCR tries to recognize its shape, but may not exactly preserve the font or layout. Expect manual verification with low-quality sources.

Restricted or damaged PDF

Opening errors may be related to a damaged file or document protection. Ask the author for a usable copy or the original editable file. This process is not a guide for bypassing passwords.

Editing PDF and modifying PDF mean the same task

In guides, you will encounter terms like edit PDF, modify PDF, or change text in PDF. What matters is the type of page content, not the function name. For longer rewriting, it may be more suitable to use the original document in Word.
