How to convert a PDF to a TXT file

TXT is useful when you need to further edit the document content as regular text. It does not preserve fonts, images, or exact layout. Before conversion, distinguish between text PDF and scan; for scans, OCR is needed first.

Try it free in the editor

Step by step

  1. Open the PDF and verify that the editor has text blocks available.
  2. If it is a scan, set the language and let OCR recognize the necessary pages.
  3. Correct obvious OCR errors, especially numbers and Czech diacritics.
  4. In the conversion or export menu, select TXT and download the file.
  5. Open the result in a text editor and check the order of paragraphs and transitions between pages.

What does not get transferred to TXT

Images, colors, signatures, and original font sizes are not part of plain text. If you need to preserve the appearance, keep the PDF. For further formatting, you can consider a basic text export to DOCX.

More columns and tables

In PDF, text is usually stored in separate blocks. Their order may not match left-to-right reading. Therefore, check the continuity of sentences and the meaning of individual values in tables and two-column documents.

Empty or incomplete export

First check whether the page contains actual text. An image of letters alone is not sufficient for text export. For an unreadable scan, go back to OCR and source quality.
